Grow Tent Setup
One of the key decisions you will have to make when you begin the journey of growing your own marijuana is where to setup the grow tent. I was fortunate enough to have a closed off room in my basement for storage with a window. It was the perfect location as it had a door and was only used for storage so nobody entered the space frequently. I positioned my grow tent right below the window. Some of the things to keep in mind when deciding on where to place the grow tent. During the last few weeks of flowering there will be a strong smell of marijuana. If you frequently open and close the tent the smell will permeate throughout the room. Also, wherever you place the vent cap to the exterior you will notice a marijuana odor. My tent vented on the side of my house opposite of the driveway and where there is no foot traffic so it was pretty ideal. The vent fan will also make noise so if you do not like the sound of a fan make sure you identify a location with some sort of sound barrier. I assume you could grow without the vent and just utilize a fan, however the smell will be trapped in the tent and will create a strong odor in your room/closet/house and it will impact the growth of your plants as they need fresh air as well as a somewhat cool environment. The lights will make the inside of the tent pretty hot. Make sure you place your tent close to an outlet or you will be running extension cords to the tent.
The tent was pretty easy to setup right out of the box. The vent fan and duct work was more of a process. First, I boarded up the window so I could create a 4-inch vent hole (similar to a dryer vent). You do not need to board up the window and could just place the vent cap out of the window with some sort of seal. It’s similar to setting up a portable a/c unit, you will need to make sure the air is properly venting outside. If the vent cap is not sealed there is a good chance the odor will come right back into the room vs. outside. I placed the vent fan in the slot above the lights on the tent taking the air out and placed a regular fan on the ground blowing air into the tent.
